Health Problems And Carpet Cleaning

by James Bentham

Although you might not consider carpet cleaning to be an absolute necessity, it has much more of an impact on your life than just how your floor looks.

Health problems can occur from the most neglected issues (stains, damp etc), which often prove to also be the toughest.

Depending on the scale of the problem, you can use anything from water and a cloth to a carpet cleaning machine, but there are plenty of reasons to clean your carpets regularly.

Damp Carpets and Asthma

A recent study by The Kuopio Regional Institute of Occupational Health conclusively found that damp carpets increased the incidences of asthma in an environment where people were constantly exposed to the carpet.

This was caused by volatile organic compounds and microbial growth flourishing in damp, unclean conditions which led to increased cases of bronchial asthma, one of the deepest forms of the disease.

Mold

Despite mold not being proven to cause asthmatic attacks directly, it is known to cause respiratory discomfort in humans.

When bacteria and allergens that live on the mold are ingested, allergic symptoms can occur, or worse if the body is already weakened by another disease.

If you regularly experience cold-like symptoms you may need to get your carpet cleaned.

Dust Mites

Unclean carpets provide a breeding ground for dust mites, much like lice in dirty hair.

Up to 100,000 dust mites can live in a square yard of carpet, living off the funghi, bacteria and skin cells that build up when the carpet is not cleaned regularly.

Research has found that most people are allergic to dust mites, and as they die, their carcasses are inhaled by humans who come into contact with the dirty carpet. Inhalation of the dead bodies has been known to cause rashes, and eye and nose irritation.
